Christmas and the New Year is, historically, a period fraught with relationship pitfalls. Now, a Salisbury-based law firm has launched a factsheet entitled: "Taking the mystery out of divorce and relationship breakdown."
Jean Hendry, from Whitehead Vizard's Family Law Department, says: "Christmas is the time of year when marriages and relationships often reach breaking point. It is, in Shakespeare's words, 'a season of discontent.'"
"At Whitehead Vizard, Christmas is the flashpoint with over 25% of all of our annual caseload for relationship breakdown, separation, divorce and family law."
Triggers for relationship disharmony at Christmas include:
* Money worries;
* Being forced to spend time together;
* Increased drinking;
* Illicit text messaging, and;
* Office party indiscretions.
Jean said: "There are lots of reasons why the festive season can leave couples feeling fractious. The combination of excessive amounts of food and alcohol, together with things like money troubles, can leave couples angry and deeply unhappy."
