The Whitehead Vizard Wilton Horse Trials has drawn to a close after an action packed weekend.
Olympic medalist William Fox-Pitt had a successful two days, winning Intermediate Section H on “Oslo”, Novice Section B on “Kilcoltrim”, Intermediate Section F on “Lionheart”, including picking up The Inspire Salver for the highest placed competitor who admits to being over 40 in the Novice section.
Wiltshire based rider Andrew Nicholson (who has a Silver medal from the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona and a Bronze from the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta) also had a good event taking the prize for Novice Section A on “Viscount George”. He also won Open Intermediate Section K on “Shady Grey” which secured him the Whitehead Vizard Cup, presented by Andrew Hodder.
Andrew Hodder said: “I was proud to present The Whitehead Vizard Cup to Andrew Nicholson. He had a great round on “Shady Grey” with a final score of 33.60, taking him well clear of Pippa Funnell, in second place, with 38.60.”
Other Wiltshire winners include Rodney Powell from who won Open Intermediate section L on “Cotton King”, Vicky Brake from Salisbury who won Novice Section M on “Dextrous Light” and Nicholas Campbell from Ebbsbourne Wake who won Open novice Section D on “Caresso”. Louisa Lockwood from Winterbourne Stoke came 3rd on “Acheron” in Intermediate Section F.
Sophie Clotworthy from Chilmark won the Elgar Cup for the best local ‘novice’ owner/rider on her horse “Daymer Bay”. Sophie works for and is sponsored by Savills in Salisbury. She said: “I always love competing at Wilton Horse Trials as it’s such a well run event in such a wonderful setting. I am really pleased to have won the trophy and am looking forward to competing in the Intermediates next year”.
Other trophy winners include Suzanna Hext who won the Robert Slade Memorial Trophy for the highest placed mare in the Intermediate and Open Intermediate Sections. Robert Slade had a fatal accident at the horse trails in 1999.
